Although there are numerous roads, public transport services are rather poor.
Public transport. A sore point in the Etna Park
Visiting Etna: bus, taxi or guided excursions?
The only scheduled bus leaves once a day from Catania train station (AST Buses) to Rifugio Sapienza (South side) and the Etna cable car. Unfortunately, there is no scheduled bus to reach the town of Piano Provenzana, on the north side of the volcano. The Etna park has never thought of coordinating or stimulating the activation of a public service on the various sides to reach the paths within the park or the points of greatest interest. This is a demonstration of an inability to enhance the natural resources of the park and profit from the activation of services that would serve to better manage and protect the territory. Ergo, we have to make do in another way. Therefore, we need to turn to Taxis or rental services with driver or we recommend that, in the face of costs that are in many cases similar or slightly higher, you can enjoy a more complete visit experience by participating in organized tours similar to those proposed on this website, which may also include transportation from the hotel.
The Circumetnea Railway
This railway serves only a small train used by the local population to travel from Catania to the villages on the slopes of Etna. It can be a valid alternative if you are not very interested in visiting the high altitudes of the volcano or as a complementary visit to the excursion on Etna. The landscapes are truly varied and interesting. Seeing a train crossing the lava fields is not an everyday thing. By carefully studying the stages and timetables on the FCE website you can decide to stop for a gastronomic break based on pistachio in Bronte or visit the most suggestive villages such as Randazzo or Linguaglossa. In addition, the transport company has created special trains on some days of the week to organize the transport of bikes (in this case our organization could also provide a private guide) or the wine train that includes a stop and visit to wineries with tastings.
