Etna Lava Tubes Project was born with the aim of spreading knowledge of little-known or unpublished Etna caves. Natural phenomena among the most fascinating of our volcano. Many texts report that on Etna there are at least 260 known caves. In reality the formation of lava tubes is very common and the number of caves is destined to increase considerably. Below we report a census of little-known caves - for which information is not available elsewhere - or unpublished discovered by our team in particular by the founders of EtnaExcursion.it Dario & Paolo Teri. During an exploratory campaign that began "for fun" in 2018 and still (April 2023), about 70 have been found, not considered in the general count indicated above. Here we report only those considered most interesting from a naturalistic point of view. For the caves already surveyed we recommend a visit to EtnaNatura.it and Mungibeddu.it
Exploration: Only visitable with helmet and lights.

This lava cave is located about 100 meters as the crow flies from the two Grotte dell'Angelo, on the path that leads from Monte Egitto to the Monte Scavo refuge, going up on the right, on the edge of the 1832 lava flow coming from Mt. Nunziata. The hypogeum was evidently at risk of being submerged by this flow and for a good part it extends right under this eruptive field. It is a cavity generated by the lava of 1651, which is accessed by a large collapse of the vault in its final part. The lighting and humidity here have favored the growth of thick vegetation, in particular enormous ferns and a large dog rose plant. The landscape is reminiscent of a subtropical environment, hence the name given to it, Grotta Amazzonia. In reality, from this large, well-lit opening, the canal proceeds both downstream, with a very low and difficult to navigate canal, where there is a second, narrower and more cramped entrance, but which does not require any tools, except attention to the instability of the rocks on the ground, while upstream the most interesting part opens up. At first the canal is about a meter high, then it rises and becomes walkable. And it rises more and more until it reaches a large, very large and spectacular room, 7 meters wide and 4 meters high. We are about 170 meters from the entrance. From this point, the cave begins to lower again until it becomes blocked. The cavity has several speleothems inside and is inhabited by several chiroptera (bats). Considering how easy it is to reach it, passing through the path, a visit is recommended.
The cave does not appear to have been registered or surveyed from the information available.

16th August 2023 – On August 14th there was a paroxysm (a “lightning” eruption) from the summit craters which has already ended. Everything falls within the normal Etna phenomena. There is no danger for the population and visitors. The excursions are taking place regularly. GO TO NEWS
