Etna Lava Tubes Project was born with the aim of spreading knowledge of little-known or unpublished Etna caves. Natural phenomena among the most fascinating of our volcano. Many texts report that on Etna there are at least 260 known caves. In reality the formation of lava tubes is very common and the number of caves is destined to increase considerably. Below we report a census of little-known caves - for which information is not available elsewhere - or unpublished discovered by our team in particular by the founders of EtnaExcursion.it Dario & Paolo Teri. During an exploratory campaign that began "for fun" in 2018 and still (April 2023), about 70 have been found, not considered in the general count indicated above. Here we report only those considered most interesting from a naturalistic point of view. For the caves already surveyed we recommend a visit to EtnaNatura.it and Mungibeddu.it
Exploration: Easily explored with just a helmet and lights.

This is a little-known cave that is not marked on the maps, located not far from the famous Grotta del Gelo and can be reached either from there by going over the promontory that overlooks it or from an ancient path, also not marked, to/from the Dagala dell'Orso (parallel to the analogous CAI path). Almost certainly originating from the same 1614 lavas, it also risked being buried by the '81 flow that grazed and partially covered the entrance. Hence the name attributed to it. Furthermore, with its more famous sister it shares a certain morphological similarity of the entrance. The cavity has a very wide entrance and extends for a few dozen meters on two sides that can be walked through thanks to the size of the rooms. There is a hole about a meter wide that would seem to give access to a very steep development of the cavity, however the walls are not stable and do not instill any confidence for safe exploration. The cave in question is not marked on the maps, but is certainly known to the shepherds of the area. The slang name used in the past could not be found.
