This cave is located on the treacherous lava field of the 1975 eruption and is quite difficult to reach. Its peculiarity lies in several aspects. First of all, the strange conformation of the lava at the large mouth of the cavity which is very smooth and clearly distinguishable from the vast adjacent eruptive field. From this funnel of “pahoehoe” lava you look out onto a 15-meter-long well, divided into two levels. The morphology of this unusual entrance, together with the fact that you have to descend vertically with a rope, almost resembles a black hole that swallows everything around it. Also for this reason, the name Grotta di Gravità Permanente seemed the most appropriate, also wanting to remember the death of the great singer-songwriter Franco Battiato, an illustrious son of the volcano. Another peculiarity, at the date of the visit (end of May 2021), both the walls and the bottom were covered with compact snow and also compact ice inside, with a multitude of frozen stalactites. Another very fascinating feature is the presence on the vault of enormous lava remelting phenomena, pendants (erroneously defined as remelting “stalactites”) and sails, visible only by accessing the inside. Although it is not a large cavity, the peculiarities mentioned make it unique in its kind. The cave – it is reiterated – is not easy to access for inexperienced people and requires the use of speleological material and also requires several hours of walking to reach it, even on rough and unstable lava flows.
