Etna Lava Tubes Project was born with the aim of spreading knowledge of little-known or unpublished Etna caves. Natural phenomena among the most fascinating of our volcano. Many texts report that on Etna there are at least 260 known caves. In reality the formation of lava tubes is very common and the number of caves is destined to increase considerably. Below we report a census of little-known caves - for which information is not available elsewhere - or unpublished discovered by our team in particular by the founders of EtnaExcursion.it Dario & Paolo Teri. During an exploratory campaign that began "for fun" in 2018 and still (April 2023), about 70 have been found, not considered in the general count indicated above. Here we report only those considered most interesting from a naturalistic point of view. For the caves already surveyed we recommend a visit to EtnaNatura.it and Mungibeddu.it
Exploration: Visitable only with helmet and lights. WARNING: Danger of collapse.

The Tringali Cave is located on the lava field 1634/36 a short distance from Monte Salto del Cane. It is a lava tube that does not require specific speleological equipment, only a helmet and lights, but it still requires great attention because a few meters from the entrance the vault is very fractured and with large apparently unstable rocks. Those who enter must therefore be very careful to avoid inappropriate contact and passages. After this point the cavity opens into a fairly large and regular room, with classic speleothems of Etna lava tubes, and then, after about thirty meters, it lowers significantly making it difficult to continue the exploration (which takes place on all fours, for about 4 meters more). The name is dedicated to Dr. Giovanni Tringali, author of the text "Gli Oronimi dei crateri dell'Etna", a book much appreciated by enthusiasts and guides of Etna as a great source of information. Since his disappearance occurred last August 30th and the detection occurred on November 29nd 2, the day of the dead, the author thought of dedicating this place in perpetual memory to a great person known personally and greatly esteemed. The Cave could be known by some shepherds in the area, but it would not be known and/or registered in the official lists.

16th August 2023 – On August 14th there was a paroxysm (a “lightning” eruption) from the summit craters which has already ended. Everything falls within the normal Etna phenomena. There is no danger for the population and visitors. The excursions are taking place regularly. GO TO NEWS
