Did you know that Etna was born from the sea? Exactly in Acitrezza and the faraglioni are not the rocks thrown by Polyphemus…
The Faraglioni and the Lachea Island
The Faraglioni and Lachea Island are famous above all for the epic myth of Ulysses who here clashed with the Cyclopes, monstrous one-eyed giants, who threw these enormous rocks at the hero's ships. In reality, the Faraglioni dei Ciclopi and Lachea Island represent the first underwater volcanic manifestations of Etna that occurred about 500 thousand years ago, even if today they are visited by tourists and local bathers who perhaps ignore the real origin of the site. For several years, the integral marine reserve was established to protect this particular natural environment.
In these places it is possible to admire some very particular volcanic phenomena including pillows, hyaloclastics, columnar basalts.
HIKING NOTES: These places can be visited both from the coast and by boat, the preferred solution for our guides. In fact, our association carries out guided tours with typical fishing boats, now used for tourism. In particular, we recommend the tour SEA MOUNTAINS
