The Alcantara Trek is an excursion that will allow you to visit the famous Alcantara Gorges from a different perspective compared to the crowded mass tourist itineraries. The natural park of the same name in fact winds along the riverbed and offers very suggestive views that are usually not visited. Some naturalistic notes to understand the particularity of the place. The Alcantara river winds through a valley at the base of the Peloritani mountains and not far from Etna. Several thousand years ago some lava flows insinuated themselves into this valley accumulating tens of meters of volcanic rock on which the river then created the spectacular canyons, called Gorges, whose walls are characterized by columnar basalts, lava stone with a prismatic section of various shapes. But not only that, the Alcantara in addition to giving us a unique landscape today hosts a plant and animal biodiversity of great interest which alternates with human agricultural activities that have benefited from the waters of the river. The trekking itinerary we propose – however customizable as it is a private tour – passes through the orchards and citrus groves of the valley floor, starting from Francavilla di Sicilia, to descend towards the Alcantara Gorges in the Fondaco Motta district. In the summer it will also be possible to take a dip in the icy waters of the river to cool off from the heat (bring a change of clothes and a beach towel!).
