The Etna and Alcantara tour allows you to visit some of the most suggestive places of the volcano and in the same day the famous Alcantara Gorges. The excursion takes place using 4 × 4 vehicles for moving between the stages. In the morning you will visit the volcano and some of the most interesting landscape places, including the secondary button craters that you will reach with an easy trek of about 1 hour, the most recent lava flows and you cannot miss, weather permitting, a visit to the immense Valle del Bove. You will also explore a lava flow cave equipped with helmet and speleologist lights. After lunch (included in the package) we will move to the magnificent site of the Alcantara Gorges , a canyon of volcanic origin that developed thousands of years ago …
Note: The tour includes jeep transfers between the various stops, easy trekking walks for the visit of some points of interest and the transfer with our vehicles from Etna to the Alcantara Gorges (about 50 minutes).
NOTICE – In the high season week of August (10-17 August), in order to avoid the most intense tourist influx to the Alcatara Gorges, we recommend that you consider Etna GranTour as an alternative.
JEEP TOUR > VALLE DEL BOVE
On board of our off-road vehicles, crossing the characteristic Etna villages, along the roads that ascend the volcano on ancient and recent lava flows, it will be possible to reach the Valle del Bove, a huge natural amphitheater that covers almost the entire eastern side of the volcano. We will explain the formation processes of this place and the geological history of the volcano (still evolving ...) object of interest to volcanologists from all over the world.
HIKING ON THE RIM OF OLD CRATERS
The second stage will be dedicated to trekking for close contact with the countless naturalistic and volcanological aspects of the Etna Park. We will then step on the paths created on the lava to climb to the brink of beautiful lateral craters where it will be possible to admire a breathtaking landscape on the north east side of Etna, Taormina, the Ionian Sea and Calabria country! Trekking can vary from one hour (easy) to about 2 hours depending on the needs and capabilities of the group.
VISIT INTO A LAVA TUBE
Etna is very rich in volcanic caves, over 250 known ones, which were formed due to the thickening of the lava due to the solidification of the outermost layer of the eruptive flow in contact with the air. Once the cooling is complete, the extraordinary morphologies connected to the passage of the fluid and incandescent lava remain visible: remelting stalactites, bubbles, shelves, rolls and more. We will provide you with lights and helmets to visit, going down inside, a fascinating volcanic cave in order to understand some truly unique and interesting dynamics.
TYPICAL LUNCH IN MOUNTAIN REFUGE
The Etna Alcantara refreshment stop is characterized by quality local specialties. You will be offered a tasting menu of the Etna specialties, thus filling you up but without weighing you down for the next part of the itinerary which also includes physical contact (for those who want) with the icy waters of the Alcantara river.
LE GOLE DELL'ALCANTARA
After the lunch break we will move to the famous Alcantara Gorges (45 min by car). Here a staircase will bring us down inside this huge natural ravine to admire naturalistic aspects of enormous charm including the columnar basalts, in the magnificent context of the famous Gole dell'Alcantara, a canyon of volcanic origin that developed thousands of years ago as a result of lava flows from the north side of the volcano. In addition to the usual selfies, the bravest can dive into the icy water of the river for a challenge of resistance to 12 ° even in the height of summer! Optionally you can visit the nearby Botanical and Geological Park (ticket € 13), for an easy trek on the panoramic path from which you can take beautiful photos.
